Salir is another one of those sleepy little Algarve towns found in the hills off the N 124. It has a castle although pretty much in ruins, but it’s still worth the visit up there cause the views of the valley are fantastic !! There is also a lovely little park… the town is super quaint. I recommend this as a day trip to get away from the crowds and enjoy the “real” Algarve. Make a stop in Alte the same day to make it a full day treat.

Salir Town Video

Alte is a tranquil little town found in the hills of the Algarve, just a little east of Messines off the N124. It has a lovely stream that trickles thru the core of the town. Several stops and rest areas are found to enjoy the peace and beauty along the water.
The town itself is sleepy but a nice change from the sometimes hustle and bustle of the coastal towns. If your looking to “escape” and enjoy a typical Algarve town, why not check out Alte ?? BUT check out the video for now

We documented several aspects of one of Portugal biggest export products. Portugal is responsible for the most cork distribution in the world. We went out to the hills and saw the cork piles, we learned about it’s history, how often cork is harvested, how long the trees live. Then we saw cork being transformed into stoppers for champagne in the factory. We also discovered that cork can be used to make MANY other things then bottle stoppers !!

We took a trip to “the end of the world” at least that’s what they used to think the tip of Portugal was ! Of course that it not the case, but it is the end of Europe and it is super beautiful. I caught the Wonders of Sagres festival or Maravilhas de Sagres in Portuguese. It took place in the Sagres fort (a great setting) and there was all kinds of things to keep you entertained. Entry into the fort was also free during this time which is a added bonus for the visitor !

If your heading in the neighborhood of Olhao then be sure to make a stop by the waterfront and market. Both are equally pleasant.  The river side walk way which stretches about one KM is very nice and beautifully landscaped. The market site is in the middle. It’s a large market actually two buildings. Here you will great a great selection of pretty much anything. Eat some great food and work it off with a walk !

We were lucky enough to attend the Sagres Sunset fest that took place on Jun 12 and 13 2009. We were there for the Friday. It was held at the Sagres fort - very cool ! the bands were great … check out some of their music just click on the picture below !

Tavira is situated in the eastern part of the Algarve about 35 KM east of Faro airport and about 35 KM west of the Spanish boarder.
It’s really a lovely town. Much of the downtown area has been nicely restored and there are plenty of parks and squares to sit back and relax, as well as several patio’s to enjoy a bottle of Vinho Verde
The town does not have a beach right at the foot of it (like many Algarve towns), but there are some lovely ones in the area. They do have however a very pretty river with several bridges that cross it. The river basically divides the town in half, the one bridge is probably one of the most “famous” pictures you will see on Tavira. Anyway enough talk - why not just watch the video’s

WOW - this is a great time. The whole town of SIlves is literally transformed into a medieval village. There are performers walking around and playing instruments. There is a jousting festival every evening and there is plenty of food and drink to keep you merry !! They even use the Zelb to purchase drinks and food. The night I was there was very busy - but in a good way. There is plenty of room for everyone, after all it takes over the whole city.
If you happen to be in the algarve this summer check it out- it happens in mid between August 8th and 16 2009 …. BUT for now check out the action from the 2008 festival !!! :-)  just click on the pictures below
